道の駅 やまがた蔵王 (山形)

今回の壁画は「Imaginal Disk (イマジナルディスク)」という題名で、道の駅やまがた蔵王が掲げるコンセプトの一環である「未知の駅」にインスピレーションを得てデザインしました。通常、このような機会に「山形らしさ」が求められる中で、山形の特産や象徴的なモチーフを取り入れながらも、今回はシュルレアリスム的なアプローチを採用しました。具体的な景色を切り取らず、山形の未知の魅力に焦点を当てています。作品は「これは山形のどこの景色だろう」という問いかけを通じて、昨日と同じ明日を追求するのではなく、未知の世界に山形を見出し、未来を想像することへの希望を表現しています。

ステンドグラス風のデザインがガラスに施されています。ステンドグラスのセルは「細胞」を象徴しており、昆虫の変態プロセスをモチーフにしています。変態の過程で重要な役割を果たす「イマジナルディスク(成虫原基)」は、将来の成虫の構造を予め指定し、それが変態の過程で具体的な組織や器官に発達する役割を担います。山形を形成する魅力的な「細胞」たちは、1つ1つが成虫の姿(ゴール)を目指して成長し、最終的に山形という地域が美しい蝶のように羽ばたくことを象徴しています。この作品を通じて、山形の未知の可能性と将来への希望を描き出しています。

I am a mural artist, and I recently designed a mural for the front glass of a newly registered Michi-no-Eki (roadside station) in Yamagata City. Drawing inspiration from the concept of “Unknown Station,” one of the station’s themes, I aimed to incorporate elements of “Yamagata-ness” into the design while embracing a surrealist expression. The artwork does not depict specific landscapes but encourages viewers to ponder, “Which part of Yamagata is this?” The intention is to encourage a mindset of discovering Yamagata in the unknown rather than living in the same yesterday and tomorrow.

The mural is titled “Imaginal Disk,” and its stained glass-style design is applied to the glass. The stained glass cells symbolize cells, drawing on the metamorphosis process of insects. The Imaginal Disk plays a crucial role in this metamorphic process, specifying the structure of the future adult insect, and as the larva undergoes metamorphosis, this specification develops into specific tissues and organs. Each cell forming Yamagata aspires to become a beautiful adult insect, growing to soar like a butterfly. Through this artwork, I express the hope for the growth of Yamagata’s individual elements toward a beautiful collective future, symbolized by the butterfly taking flight.
